The Sound Optic

The secret life of the home — Hi-fi

The Sound Optic imagines a piece of correspondence that can be read, heard, and seen. A transparent record doubles as a magnifying lens, bringing a small photograph and a recorded message together in one letter.

An imagined history

The project’s fictional backstory places the Sound Optic in 1947, as a product of the imagined ‘Wuanny Audio Company’. It asks what a mailed voice message might become when listening and looking are designed as one experience.

Read. Hear. See.

A folded paper stand holds the record and photograph. The lens enlarges the image, while the envelope gathers the separate elements into a single, intimate object of correspondence.
